*Dr Joseph F. Grima PhD, MA, BA(Hons), DipEduc(Adm & Mgt), MIM is a History graduate from the University of Malta where he carried out post-graduate research on the naval history of the Order of St John during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Presently a visiting lecturer at the University of Malta, Dr Grima weas a former History teacher and Head of School who retired as Assistant Director of Education in 2006. He has published books about the History of the Order and the French in Malta, Printing and Censorship in Malta, Maltese Chapels, two volumes on Malta’s architectural heritage between 1530 and 1798, and the history of his native Qormi and its parishes together with papers on various historical subjects including naval history. He is the present editor of Melita Historica, is editing the present commemorative volume, and has been the Honorary Secretary of the Malta Historical Society since 1979.

The first General Meeting to elect a President and eight Committee members, in accordance with the statute, was held on 26 April 1950. At the General Meeting of 25 January 1968, the statute was amended and, henceforth, a President and ten Committee members were duly elected. As per amendment to the statute during the general meeting held on 30 January 1999, elections for a President and a new Committee have been, to date, held bi-annually.

[1] Amendments to the statute: (1) As from the General Meeting of 1 February 1982, no member could henceforth be elected to the presidency for more than three consecutive years, but s/he could be re-elected to the office after the lapse of at least one year. (2) As from the General Meeting of 30 January 1999, no member could, in future, be president for more than two consecutive terms of two years each, but s/he could be re-elected after a lapse of at least one term of two years.

[2] Mgr Bonnici passed away on 21 October 1978 when in office. It was decided to hold a General Meeting on 11 December 1978 so that an election for a new President and Committee would be held. In fact, two elections were held in 1978 (February and December) but none in 1979.
