[p.58] Minutes of Meetings April 12, 1950

        A preliminary meeting was held at the Royal University of Malta Library at 5 p.m., the President pro temp., Professor Mgr. A. Bonnici, in the Chair.

        The meeting was informed that the provisional Committee had drafted the statute of the Society, of which a copy was laid before the members present. The sections of the statute were read and approved with amendments.

        The meeting agreed that the Provisional Committee should continue in office and that it be authorised to receive subscriptions for the year 1950 until the Committee of the Society is formally elected.

        The Society then adjourned until April 26th.

April 26, 1950

        The first general meeting of the Society was held at the Royal University Library, at 5 p.m., the President, Mgr. A. Bonnici, in the Chair.

        The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the election of the Committee for 1950 took place. It was decided that with the exception of the President, the appointment of the officials should be left to the members elected to the Committee. Mgr Bonnici was elected President after a vote taken by secret ballot. The following members were then elected : Dr. A. Ganado, Professor Canon E. Coleiro, Dr. J. Baldacchino, the Very Reverend Professor J.Sapiano, Chevalier V. Bonello, Dr. E. Sammut, Professor J. Manchè, and Rev. Philip Callus.

        The Society then adjourned sine die.

December 4, 1950

        The second general meeting of the Society was held at the Royal University Library at 5.15 p.m., the president, Mgr. A. Bonnici, in the Chair.

        The Chairman gave details of the Society’s activities, stressing the work initiated by the Committee in connection with (a) the compilation of a card-index of Melitensia, (b) an iconographical index of persons and events of importance in Maltese history, (c) a list of archives and documents in private hands, and (d) a list of persons and events deserving to be commemorated by a monument.

        In addition, the Committee had planned a series of general meetings at which original papers would be read and discussed. It had also decided to publish a journal and, possibly, monographs on special subjects.

        The following gentlemen undertook to index and classify articles of historical [p.59] interest in periodicals: Archivum Melitense — Fr. A. Vella, O.P., and Mr. G. Zarb Adami; Archivio Storico di Malta — Rev. Philip Callus and Dr. E. Sammut; La Diocesi di Malta — Mr. J.B. Francia.

        The Society then adjourned until February 21, 1951.

February 21, 1951

        The third general meeting of the Society was held at the Royal University Library at 5 p.m., the President, Mgr. A. Bonnici, in the Chair.

        The minutes of the preceding meetings having been read and confirmed, the Chairman read a paper entitled “What is History?,” followed by Chevalier V. Bonello, who read a paper on “Il Primo Architetto dell’Ordine a Malta.”

        The members present were informed of work carried out in connection with the compilation of the card-index of Melitensia.

        The Society then adjourned sine die.

April 20, 1951

        The fourth general meeting of the Society was held at the Royal University Library at 5.15 p.m., the President, Mgr. A. Bonnici, in the Chair.

        The Chairman called on Mr. Lionel H. Butler, M.A., Fellow of All Souls, Oxford, to read a paper on “The Università of Malta in the 15th Century.”

        The Society then adjourned until June 6th.

June 6, 1951

        The fifth general ineeting was held at the Royal University Library at 5.30 p.m., the President, Mgr. A. Bonnici, in the Chair.

        The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the Chairman called on Fr. Bonaventura Fiorini, O.M.C., to read a paper on “La Relazione tra l’Ordine Gerosolimitano e i Minori Conventuali di Malta.”

        The Chairman outlined the activities of the Society during 1950-51 and the Hon. Treasurer then gave his report.

        The election of the Committee for 1951 was then held. Mgr. A. Bonnici was confirmed as President by acclamation. The following members, were elected: Chev. V. Bonello, Professor Canon E. Coleiro, the Very Reverend Professor J. Sapiano, Dr. A. Ganado, Dr. J. Baldacchino, Rev. Philip Callus, Mgr. A. Pantalleresco and Dr. E. Sammut.

        The Society then adjourned sine die.

September 26, 1951

        The sixth general meeting of the Society was held at the Royal University Library, at 5.15 p.m., the President, Mgr. A. Bonnici, in the Chair.

        [p.60] The Chairman introduced Miss Hilda I. Lee, M.A., Assistant Lecturer in International History at the London School of Economics. Miss Lee then read a paper on “The Development of the Malta Constitution 1813-1849.”

        The Society then adjourned sine die.

December 4, 1951

        The seventh general meeting of the Society was held at the Royal University Library at 5.15 p.m., the President, Mgr. A. Bonnici, in the Chair.

        Professor W. Ganado, M.D., M.R.C.P., gave a lecture on “Political Parties in Malta following on the Rising against the French.”

        The Society then adjourned until January 17th, 1952.

January 17, 1952

        The eighth general meeting of the Society was held at the Royal University Library at 5 p.m., the President, Mgr. A. Bonnici, in the Chair.

        The minutes of the previous meetings having been read and confirmed, the Chairman gave a brief survey of the activities of the Society during 1951. The Secretary reported on progress achieved in the compilation of the card-index of Melitensia and the Treasurer gave his report.

        The election of the Committee for 1952 was then held. Mgr. A. Bonnici was confirmed as President by acclamation. The following members were then elected: Professor Canon E. Coleiro, Chevalier V. Bonello, Mr. E.R. Leopardi, Dr. E. Sammut, Dr. A. Ganado, Dr. Baldacchino, Mr. J. Cassar Pullicino and Dr. J. Galea.

        The Society then adjourned until January 25th.

January 25, 1952

        The ninth general meeting of the Society was held at the Royal University Library at 5.15 p.m., the President, Mgr. A. Bonnici, in the Chair.

        Mr. Anthony Cremona read a paper on “L’Antica Fondazione della Scuola dell’Arabo a Malta.”

The Society then adjourned sine die.

April 18, 1952

        The tenth general meeting of the Society was held at the Royal University Library at 5.30 p.m. The President, Mgr. A. Bonnici read a paper on “The Church and the Freedom of the Press in Malta.”

        The Society then adjourned sine die.
