M. GALEA, Brief historical notes on some smaller Churches in Valletta, Veritas Press 1972.

The author of “Malta: Historical Sketches & More Historical Sketches” has given us a booklet of 49 pages in which he describes the small churches of Valletta, for instance S. Caterina d’Italia and S. Barbara. It is a useful compilation of the various items, such as paintings, sacred vestments, devotional objects and old furniture, still extant in these chapels, together with a short description of the architecture of the building, the restorations and modifications. This short account given will hardly satisfy the specialist, since the work is based on second-hand sources, but the writer gives a list of published works consulted. In the absence of a better study, the general reader will find it useful. We look forward for the publication of “More small churches in Valletta,” hoping to find in the bibliography a note as to whether original records and other archival material are available to those scholars wishing to compile a more specialized study of such smaller churches.
